A PHOTOGRAPHIC SERIES + FILM BY ROBERT ASCROFT FEATURING ANGELA SARAFYAN, KNOWN FOR HER ROLE AS CLEMENTINE PENNYFEATHER ON THE HBO SERIES “WESTWORLD” I met Angela Sarafyan in 2018 at the Emmy Awards where I photographed an iconic portrait of her for the Television Academy. Shortly after we began discussions about collaborating on a creative shoot. She is a uniquely stunning beauty and once I learned that she was a dancer I knew she would be the perfect subject for this body of personal work. Inspiration came from film stills and dance movement. My research also involved the study of sculpture that helped inform hand movement and body position. We conducted light tests to achieve the feel of clinical, non-directional ambient lighting reminiscent of a medical or scientific laboratory. I commissioned the fabrication of a pool to meet my exact specifications. The pool itself was to be a work of art, as it would become an integral part of the final images. Clean lines and transparency were essential. I wanted a piece that is both functional and artistic. This project was originally conceived as a series of still photographs. As production moved forward I was compelled by the opportunity to direct a short film that would serve as a companion piece to the still photographs. Angela and I found that we could best communicate in the visual language through music and sound. Introducing each other to musical references served as inspiration for her to identify the “character” she would play during the shoot. Upon completion of the shoot I scored and performed the original soundtrack for the film. This allowed me the luxury of being inspired by our soundtrack to edit the film and the stills. It was the reverse process of how I typically work and one I found effective in opening up a new way of seeing. I extend my gratitude and thanks to Angela Sarafyan. She was a true collaborator on this project and helped expand my idea to the far reaches of creativity.
